Here's the story behind the event:

Benefit will aid recovery of cyclist struck by truck

News-Democrat

Cyclists from throughout the region are joining forces to help Gerry Frierdich, a 44-year-old Belleville man who was paralyzed from the chest down in a bike accident last August.

The Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society, Touring Cyclist in Fairview Heights and Frierdich's friends and family members are holding a Road to Recovery Benefit Bicycle Ride in Belleville on Sunday.

"He's a great guy," said co-organizer Sandy Gore, of Belleville, whose husband, Bud, has been friends with Frierdich since childhood. "The more we can make people aware of who he is and what he's going through, the better. We want to get him outside. He needs to be around friends and family. And we want to ease the financial burden on him. There are things that insurance won't cover."

Cyclists can cover 6, 15, 30 or 50 miles, starting at Central Junior High School in Belleville between 8 and 10 a.m. The cost is $25 for adults, $15 for ages 13 to 17 or $5 for ages 12 and under.

Frierdich plans to attend the event, which will include children's activities and live music in the schoolyard from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (lunch available for purchase).

"I can't believe how many people are coming out of the woodwork to donate money to me," said Frierdich, who returned to his Belleville home in January after spending two months in a Chicago hospital. "It's crazy."

Frierdich had been working as a photographer at Crafty Eye Photography in Belleville for 20 years when the accident occurred at 6:10 a.m. Aug. 19. He was riding a recumbent bicycle on the shoulder of South Green Mount Road in Belleville on his way to The Orchards Golf Club.

A truck veered off the road and slammed into Frierdich from behind. He was a quadriplegic when he woke up five weeks later.

Today, Frierdich has limited movement in his arms but no fine-motor skills in his hands. He rides a specially adapted stationary bike every day as part of his therapy at home.

"It's to keep my body limber and toned up," he said. "So if my hands or my legs do decide to wake up, they won't be all curled up and stiff."

Frierdich hopes to get back on the road soon with a hand-powered bicycle or "handcycle." He sees the chances of getting into another accident as minimal.

"If I would have been out there 10 minutes earlier or 10 minutes later, (the August accident) wouldn't have happened," Frierdich said. "It was a guy who fell asleep at the wheel, and he just plowed into me. What can you do to avoid that? Nothing. You've got to get back on the horse, so to speak."

Cyclists can register for the Road to Recovery Benefit Bike Ride in advance at www.chiefgetwell.com or at Central Junior High School, 1801 Central School Road, beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday with complimentary juice and donuts.

Cyclists are required to wear helmets. Van support will be available until 3 p.m. For more information, call Dawn Weber at 398-6800 or dawnw@touringcyclist.com, or Roger Kramer at 239-2793 or bike2eat@rogerkramercycling.org.

Two other benefits are being held this weekend to help metro-east residents in need.

Poker run in Mascoutah

A poker run and raffle for a 50-inch plasma TV set on Saturday will help Jessica Baker, a Mascoutah woman who was severely injured in a car accident over the winter.

The poker run will start at 11 a.m. at the Juicy Peanut (check-in at 10) and end at Scheve Park in Mascoutah with a pig roast, beer tent, music and door prizes. The cost is $10 per poker hand with five stops. For more information, call Lonnie at 660-8473 or Dawn at 830-0652.

Barbecue in Marine

"A Day for Evan!" will help the family of 2-year-old Evan Howell, of Marine, who is battling eye cancer.

Activities from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday will include a barbecue, pony rides, face painting, a petting zoo, juggler and raffle at Marine Fireman's Park, off Illinois 143. For more information, call Kelly Tracy at 520-8919. Donations also can be send to Team Evan at Bradford Bank in Marine.

World Harmony Run

The Get Up & Go Celebration event this Saturday (May 10th) just got a little bigger.  The World Harmony Run will make Get Up & Go part of its 10,000 mile, 50 state journey through the U.S.  According to USA organizer Lee Berube, at about 2:30 pm on Saturday the international torch will make it's way down Highway 15 in St. Clair County and arrive at the Get Up & Go Celebration being held at Belleville West High School.  Once there, the runners will make a presentation to the people at the event.  Afterwards, people will have a chance to touch the torch, talk to the runners, take pictures and even participate.

"I can't tell you how excited I was when I got a call out of the blue that this incredible International Run wanted to take part in our event," said Mark Peter, co-director for Get Up & Go.  "We knew the word was getting out, but we didn't expect it to get out that far!  The fact that they are trying to do the same thing worldwide with their run, connect communities, as we are trying to do here with health and fitness, is just wonderful!"

The World Harmony Run travels the world to encourage goodwill at the local level. Simultaneous events occur in some 100 nations throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Since the inaugural Run in 1987, more than five-million people have participated. Endorsements over the years have come from many world figures, including President Nelson Mandela, President Mikhail Gorbachev, Pope John Paul II, Mother Teresa, The U.S. Conference of Mayors, as well as dozens of members of Congress, governors and mayors.

Carl Lewis, spokesman for the Run, said, "By carrying the Torch, millions of citizens are taking a step for Harmony and bridging the cultural and social boundaries that separate nation from nation. By covering so many thousands of miles on foot, these courageous runners will encourage countless young people to transcend our differences and, instead, embrace our common aspiration for a better world."

Just like Get Up & Go, everyone can participate in the World Harmony Run: athletes and non-athletes, young and old alike. Everyone can carry the Torch a few steps, a few blocks or a few miles or just come out and cheer the runners as they pass through. People can join local school children, celebrities, and government officials in one of the thousands of welcoming ceremonies along the route.

You can find out more about the World Harmony Run at www.WorldHarmonyRun.org/usa

Belleville Running Club in the paper

The Belleville Running Club made the paper! (see the article below from the Belleville News Democrat about the River to River Relay). And don't make fun of me too much for my quotes...

Local runners cover the miles

BY ROD KLOECKNER
News-Democrat

A grueling 75-mile relay race through the rolling countryside of deep Southern Illinois won't make many people's top 10 list of fun things to do on the weekend.

It did, however, for a number of area runners who participated in the 21st annual River-to-River Relay on April 19, a brutal road race that brings many competitors to the brink of exhaustion.

Among the 240 teams that competed in nine divisions -- open, women, mixed, masters, women masters, mixed masters, handicap, corporate (open) and corporate handicap -- were 19 from the metro-east.

Three of those entries were from Belleville. A group of city firefighters, Belleville Fire Department Roadrunner Local No. 53, competed in the open division while the Belleville Running Club fielded two eight-person teams.

"It's weird," said Dan Trapp, a member of the Belleville Running Club. "It's a race that a lot of people have never heard of, but the metro-east is always well represented in the race."

Belleville Running Club finished 17th out of 86 teams in the open division with a time of 9 hours, 18 minutes, 23 seconds. However, the team finished second out of 11 running clubs that entered the running club division, missing first place by a second.

Belleville Running Club No. 2 took 13th in the mixed division with a time of 9:46:22 and was sixth in the running club division, which is restricted to teams consisting of members of the same running club (no ringers allowed).

"We were very pleased," said Trapp, who ran for Belleville Running Club No. 2. "It's a lot of fun. Running is generally an individual sport so this is a fun time to be on a team. Since we've run it a couple of times before, everybody knows how much fun it is and we had a lot of people that wanted to do it this year."

Members of Belleville Running Club were: Doug Havlin, Jacob Bockhorn, Casey Nesbit, David Estrada, Stephanie Adams, Toby Trapp, Greg Jackson, Doug Cotton and Sara Fite (alternate).

Running for Belleville Running Club No. 2 were: Dan Trapp, Jules Grandy, Keenan Peel, Molly Mernick, Ryan Rhodes, Chris Anderson, Alan Elfrink, Matt Albertson and Jen Peel (alternate).

The race --which starts on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River valley in LaRue Pine Hills -- follows country roads through the Shawnee National Forest to its finish at the Ohio River in Golconda.

The race attracts over 2,000 runners from across North America and is unique in that it's basically a team sport for runners, who often run in solitude.

Each of the eight runners completes three sections that range in length from 2.5 miles to 4 miles, starting at 6:15 a.m. The finish line closes exactly at 8 p.m. Each runner runs about 10 miles over a scenic but tough 75-mile course that includes many hills.

The first part of the course, which encompassed about three miles, had to be eliminated this year because of a landslide.

"The hills on this course are just ridiculous," Trapp said. "We spent some time trying to find the hilliest routes possible. We spent some time at The Shrine (of Our Lady of the Snows). Some people during the winter were cranking up the incline on the treadmill.

"Anything we could to prepare ourselves for the hills. Knowing what to expect helped a lot."

All the training and experience must have helped. Three years ago, the Belleville Running Club team didn't finish with the race in the allotted 12 hours. Last year, it finished in 10:44.26.

"We ran out of time and got kicked off the course the first year," Trapp sad. "Last year we improved upon that and this year we improved even more."

For the first time in several years, weather was not a hindrance in the race. Temperatures were in the mid-50 degree range with an intermittent drizzle.

"It was almost ideal," Trapp said. "Last year was really warm and the year before that was really warm, too. This year, it was a little bit cooler and it was perfect. It's welcomed for running, it really is."

Other local teams were: 80, Area You Crazy (Highland), AIR Mobility Flying Feet (Scott Air Force Base), AYOW (Nashville), Chester Running Club (Chester), Easy to Pass and Tough to Lap (Chester), Gooch (Collinsville), Great Adventures Racing Team (Scott Air Force Base), Metro Milers (Edwardsville), Molar Marauders (Alton), Relay Renegades (New Athens), Rolling Stones (Mascoutah), Running Scared (Sparta), Running Start (Shiloh), Team Godzilla (Edwardsville), Team Godzilla HC (Edwardsville) and Under Par (Greenville).
