Subject: BRC -- Race Day at McKendree

Hi, Dan.

McKendree University in Lebanon, Illinois is hosting a summertime cycling event on Saturday, July 23rd and we are hoping you can pass the information on to Bellville Running Club members and perhaps post it on your BRC web site Events Calendar.  We know you are all primarily runners, but there might be some cyclists in the group or you may know cyclists who are looking for a biking event this side of the river.

We've designed our 18-mile "The Great McKendree Bike Chase" to be a fun event (a combination ride and race) and welcome riders of ALL levels of cycling expertise.  You can lead the group and hammer the Chase in under an hour or take your time and count how many riders you pass (or who pass you) in the two hours that we'll have the course open.  Your bicycle is your choice:  cruiser, hybrid, road bike, mountain bike, or the Huffy from your basement, but riders must wear a serviceable helmet to participate.

Our Bike Chase is not a U.S. Cycling Federation event and cyclists will NOT be riding on a closed course.  While traffic early on a Saturday morning is very light in Lebanon, we'll ask everyone to be careful of vehicles, especially when making turns.  We'll have volunteers all over the course to keep things safe, but cyclists still need to exercise caution and be aware of other riders who may be participating with different cycling skill levels.

The Chase starts at the McKendree Fountain in the center of campus and finishes on our track inside the Leemon Field stadium.  Each of the six, 3-mile laps follows a route through Lebanon business and residential areas, into and out of our stadium, and then back to the campus fountain and features the challenge of high-speed straight-aways, tight turns, a segment of brick road, a single-file sidewalk, and the track surface itself.

The Bike Chase starts at 8:00am with a safety briefing set for 7:40am.    Registration fee is $15.00 for each participant with $5.00 added if you wait until Chase Day to sign up.  You may register in person on campus at the Intramural Gym located in the Melvin Price Convocation Center, download the registration form at mckendree.edu/raceday, or register online (for a small fee) at "active.com."  Mailed entries must be postmarked by July 19th.  The Chase Day staff will provide both T-shirts and post-race refreshments while they last.  For your convenience, I've attached the registration form; the course map; and an information sheet which includes (1) a description of the Chase course, (2) driving directions to McKendree, and (3) instructions for registering online through active.com.

So, enjoy your summer, have a safe Independence Day weekend, and we hope to see some BRC members bright and early on Chase Day, July 23rd, to ride the streets of McKendree and Lebanon

Regards,

Law Day Run

The Law Day Run is tomorrow morning. Since the course is on our home turf, it is usually well attended by BRC members and we usually kick a lot of butt.

- Beginners. Good luck to all of you who have been training with the Beginner's 5K Training Program. I'm sure you'll all do great out there!

- Tent. The Belleville Running Club will have our tent and a table out there. If you've been watching the e-mails on this list, but haven't made your way out yet, please stop by the tent and meet us.

- BRC Shirts. If you've got one, don't forget to wear it.

- Kids Run. The 5K is at 9:00am and it is followed by a diaper dash and a youth 1K race at approximately 9:45am. The BRC will be running with the kids to encourage them. The kids races start at the same location as the 5K.  I currently have Shelly Adams, Christy Belsom, Shannon Blaes, Dan Ernst, Jason McCoskey, Ken McKinley, Kristen Preston, Brendan Preston, Patty Shaw, Debbie Townsend, and Sarah West committed to running with the kids. We can use as many people as possible, so please help out regardless of whether or not you've already committed to doing so.

- Picture. As in past years, we will take a group picture after the race. Please assemble at the finish line right after the kids 1K run is complete.

Thanks!

BRC Half/Full Marathon training - Week 7 Long Run

Good afternoon everyone!

Tomorrow is our seventh long run. We will get started at the prescribed time below in the parking lot behind the Belleville St Louis Bread Company.

Half Marathoners – We will start at 8:00am and will be running 9 miles (see schedule). We will run 1 loop on our 5 mile route and then one loop on our newly created 4 mile route (you may notice that the 4 mile route is an awful lot like the 3 mile route). If you aren't familiar with the route, there are water fountains and restrooms on the course. We usually break for a couple of minutes at the end of the loop to get drinks of Gatorade, take a GU, etc.

Marathoners – We will start at 7:15am and are scheduled to run 18 miles (see schedule). We will run 3 loops on our 5 mile route and then 1 loop on our 3 mile route. If you aren't familiar with the route, there are water fountains and restrooms on the course. We usually break for a couple of minutes at the end of the loop to get drinks of Gatorade, take a GU, etc.

Thanks,

Dan

P.S. What does everyone think about moving our 03/19/11 long run to forest park? The downside is that this will be our longest run and there are also two local races on the same day: McKendree's races (5k, 10k, 10mi) and a 5k/10k at the shrine. The other alternative would be to move our 03/26/11 run.

Beginner's 5K Training and Speedwork

Beginner's 5K Training

The first training session for the Beginner's 5K Training is scheduled for March 1st at 6pm at the Belleville East track.

There is more information on the website at http://www.bellevillerunningclub.com/beginner.html, including a flyer and the training schedule.

This is your chance to finally get your friend, family member, etc in to running! It would be great if everyone could try to get at least one person to show up to (and complete) this training!

Speedwork is back

In conjunction with the Beginner's 5K Training, speedwork is also starting back up on March 1st. Although we will have the track starting at 6pm, we would ask that you don't actually start your speedwork session until the beginner's training session is over. Your blazing speed can be a bit intimidating to someone just getting into running. However, please still show up at 6pm and run with the beginners. It can be a perfect warm up for your speedwork.

BRC Half/Full Marathon training - Week 6 Long Run

Good afternoon everyone!

Tomorrow is our sixth long run, which puts us officially at the halfway point of our training. We will get started at the prescribed time below in the parking lot behind the Belleville St Louis Bread Company.

Half Marathoners – We will start at 8:00am and will be running 6 miles (see schedule). We will run 1 loop on our 5 mile route and then pick up another mile by going out and back ½ mile on the course. If you aren't familiar with the route, there are water fountains and restrooms on the course. We usually break for a couple of minutes at the end of the loop to get drinks of Gatorade, take a GU, etc.

Marathoners – We will start at 7:15am and are scheduled to run 12 miles (see schedule). We will run 2 loops on our 5 mile route and pick up another 2 miles by going out and back 1 mile on the course. If you aren't familiar with the route, there are water fountains and restrooms on the course. We usually break for a couple of minutes at the end of the loop to get drinks of Gatorade, take a GU, etc.

Thanks,

Dan

P.S. If you're looking for a little running humor, check out this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw5MHsO-JI8). You may have already seen it going around facebook a couple of months ago.

P.S.S. At one time, we discussed running forest park one of these weeks and maybe running part of the race course. We have 5 more long runs scheduled. Is there a week that any specifically prefers?

Get Up and Go - Pointing the Way to Health

Get Up and Go (http://getupgo.info/) has started a new challenge called the Pointing the Way to Health Challenge (see details below).

We have a Belleville Running Club group on the Get Up and Go site with a modest goal of 250 miles per week. Please consider creating a user id and tracking your runs on this site so we can kick every other groups' butt. I know our 250 mile goal won't be difficult to meet if just a small fraction of us report our results.

Thanks,
Dan

Is it Possible to Count What We Can Do for Health?

It's a simple idea, but we hope it will grow into something significant enough to help transform the health of an entire county. In St. Clair County, Illinois, that means counting the collective efforts of nearly 262,000 citizens! We know this is an an ambitious goal. We're not sure if something this big has ever been tried before.  Nonetheless, it's part of the Year 2020 Vision of the Get Up & Go! Campaign, and we are asking for your help to see it through over the next several years. We call this idea the Pointing the Way to Health Challenge because we want to work together to do two things:

First, we want to see how many individuals and groups are out there practicing (or willing to practice) activities that promote active living and healthy eating. If you are one of them would you help point the way for others by making and tracking a health goal through our website?

Second (and this is the fun part), we want to see if we can capture all these combined efforts and share them in such a way as to make them count for something. To start out, the Get Up & Go! Campaign is going to count just four things - Time, Distance, Servings and Pounds. Simply put, our volunteers started asking "What if…"

  1. What if we could count the amount of time spent in fitness activities being promoted through the many extracurricular programs undertaken by our local schools, volunteer groups and churches?
  2. What if we could span the total distance being logged by the many clubs, organizations and schools in our communities as they encourage more walking, running, biking, swimming, etc?
  3. What if we could count the total number of servings of healthy fruits and vegetables for people who have set a goal to live healthier by trying to practice the recommended guidelines of eating 4-5 servings each day?
  4. What if we could combine the total number of pounds lost through all those office "Biggest Losers" contests or weight reduction programs? Like the 1998 Iowa town that lost a ton.

If we can succeed at counting our efforts in just these four areas, imagine how many more ways we can find to work together to transform the health of St. Clair County and its many diverse communities over the next nine years?

Please consider joining the journey and sharing your progress along the way. Before you get started, there are just few things we want you and your team to know about setting and keeping healthy goals and using our online system.  To see or downlaod our Pointing the Way to Health - Users Guide, simply click the file.

Thank you, in advance, for being such an important partner in this effort.

You can see metro-east park, bike trail plans on Jan. 18, 19

FYI.  See the article below about the MEPRD's Community Update on their Long Range Plan.  If you like our local trails and would like to see more of them, please try to attend.  According to MEPRD's website, "those in attendance will have the opportunity to ... provide comments on the projects being proposed for priority."  A good showing by the BRC at this event can only be beneficial in the development of additional trails and improvements to our existing trails.

Two chances are coming up to have a voice in planning local parks and bike trails.

The Metro East Park and Recreation District will share long-range plan for parks and recreation projects and take comments about the plans during two open houses.

The first is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 18 at the district office, 104 United Drive in Collinsville.

The second is 6:30 to 8 p.m. Jan. 19 at the William and Florence Smith Art Center at Southwestern Illinois College, 2700 Carlyle Ave. in Belleville.

The district creates or helps in development of an interconnecting system of parks, trails and greenways in Madison and St. Clair counties. It is funded by a one-tenth-cent sales tax approved by voters in November 2000.

Bike Belleville - Sunday, October 24, 1-4pm

Attached is a flyer for the "Bike Belleville" event this Sunday from 1pm-4pm.  Since much of this event takes place within our area of responsibility for the "Adopt a Trail" program, please pay special attention when you run on the trail this evening and Saturday morning, picking up any trash that you see.

And here's a bnd.com article on the event:

While Jacob Wainwright ran the first taxi service in Belleville in the late 1800s, he was drawn to other modes of transportation as well. So much so that he spent the enormous sum of $175 in 1895 for a newfangled "velocipede."

It was often called the "bone-shaker" in the United States for its rough ride, but it's better known to us today as the bicycle.

Wainwright became so fond of the bicycle that he ran a racing rink near his home on South 19th Street. Bicycles became the fastest way to get around town for many business people in the early 20th century, including messengers, cigar distributors and traveling seamstresses.

The Optimist Club of Belleville and the city's Parks and Recreation Department hope you'll leave your four-wheeler in the garage Sunday and hop on the two-wheeler or lace up your walking shoes for an afternoon of exploring local pedestrian trails.

The free Bike Belleville event from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday begins at Optimist Park, West F and North Second streets, where riders and walkers can take the Richland Creek Greenway Trail either north to North End Park or south to South End Park and back. The course between the two parks runs 2 miles. Those who want more exercise can travel from North End Park on the MetroLink Bike Trail to Southwestern Illinois College.

Participants can stop at seven different parks along the way, and are encouraged to bring children and grandchildren. A police officer will talk about bike safety and volunteers will man intersections on the trails.

At those parks will be a variety of events: refreshments, music, entertainment and displays on fitness and nutrition. There will be attendance prizes and givaways, including helmets and two bicycles, one for a boy and one for a girl.

Bike Belleville

What: Bicyclists, walkers and skaters are encouraged to follow local trails that connect seven parks in Belleville. The free event includes activities, entertainment and refreshments.

When: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Begins at Optimist Park, North F and West 2nd streets. Parking available at nearby Hough Park.

Co-chairmen: Judy Belleville and Charles Mayhew

Information: 234-7862 or 277-5731

Actvities:

Optimist Park -- Bicycle World/Helmets First; music by Phil Elmore's Mobile Music Machine.

Hough Park -- JoJo on the Go Fitness and Dance with music for children and adults. Meet Dora the Explorer. Refreshments will be available.

North End Park -- Fun Spot Skaters exhibition with music; YMCA bounce house; refreshments.

If you aren't signed up to help, please come on down, check out the booth, buy some chili, and talk some running with us.  I'm sure some of you have been on this list for a while, but have never made it out for a run.  Please stop by the booth and say hi.

What's New in 2011

Starting Line at 2009 Marathon

After the 2010 Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend we conducted an online participant survey to evaluate how to improve the event for 2011. We received thousands of great suggestions and positive comments. Here's what we found out – More than 95% of participants would recommend the event and 86% rated it excellent or above average, which is great news. In addition, comments suggested that we needed to change the start line and add more volunteers for the early water stations. So in 2011 we will have a corral start with color coded bibs, based on your self reported projected finish time, which should help provide for a more efficient start. Other improvements include adding more volunteers and entertainers along the course, creating a post-race celebration area, virtual runner packets, runner tracking and text alerts. For more updates, including race caps, course time limits and a new apparel/shoe sponsor visit www.gostlouis.org.

Re: [BellevilleRunningClub] 2010 Beginner's Training

I just wanted to give everyone an update on the status of the Beginner's Training.  A bunch of us got together last week to discuss what we wanted to do with the program and we got off to a good start.

The flyer for the program and the training schedule are attached to this e-mail.  You can also find these documents on the website and under the files section of the Yahoo Group.

The first beginner's run will be on Tuesday, March 2nd at the Belleville East Track (assemble at 5:50pm, start running at 6:00pm).  We will be holding a Meet n Greet at the Belleville Parks and Recreation office next Wednesday (2/24/10) at 6pm to allow any interested new runners the opportunity to meet us before they show up at the track.  If you know of anyone that has been talking about taking up running, encourage them to attend next Wednesday's meeting or show up on March 2nd.

Thanks,
Dan

Subject: [BellevilleRunningClub] 2010 Beginner's Training

In each of the last two years, the BRC has sponsored a beginner's training program in the spring.  This beginner's training was created with the goal of encouraging new runners to run their first 5K at the Law Day Run and was done in conjunction with the Get Up and Go program.

Since January is now upon us, it is time to start thinking about the 2010 program.  This year's program will be even bigger since it will include City of Belleville employees participating in a wellness program.

During the last two years, we had a training program based on the Runner's World's Beginner's 5K Program.  However, this year we are going to go with something similar to Cool Running's Couch to 5K Plan (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/23/181.shtml).

The plan is that the Beginner's Group would meet on Tuesday night's at 6pm at Belleville East (in conjunction with speedwork).  We would also encourage them to join us during the Thursday night runs, although I think we would wait until the third week of their program (when daylight savings time begins).  Additionally, depending on interest, we could also meet with the Beginner's Group on Saturdays after our group run.

So we have three tasks for everyone:

1. If you know of anyone that has been talking about taking up running, encourage them to think about participating in the 2010 BRC Beginner's Training Program.
2. If you have any interest in helping out, please e-mail me directly at danieltrapp@yahoo.com.  We will need at least need a few people to run with and encourage the new runners.
3. We would like to put together a Frequently Asked Questions for Beginning Runners document to share with the Beginner's Group.  This document would include all of the questions that you were afraid to ask or just didn't know to ask when you first started running and might include such topics as the proper use of body glide, how to breathe when running, how to stretch, where to go to the bathroom, where you put your keys, etc.

Thanks,
Dan

During the last two years, we had a training program based on the Runner's World's Beginner's 5K Program.  However, this year we are going to go with something similar to Cool Running's Couch to 5K Plan (http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml).

Thanks,
Dan

Thanksgiving Day 5-Mile Run On Belleville Mainstreet

When: November 26th

Time: 8:30 AM

Where: Meet at the back parking lot of the St Louis Bread Company in
Belleville.

Distance: 5 Miles

Route: We will start at the Bread Company and run out and back along
mainstreet. Mile markers will be setup for each mile.

New: This year we decided to add something new to the run, Time Projections.  If you would like to participate, we will take your projected finishing time for the 5 miles.  The catch is that you can't use your watch during the run.  We will have a designated time person recording each runner's time.  The top three runners closest to their projected time will win SPECIAL BRC PRIZES.  Please bring a can good for your entry into the Projection Run.  All can goods we receive will be donated to a local charity.  Doing the Projection Run is optional, so please comeout and run either way.

Afterwards we will have coffee and mini-bagels for anyone who wants
to get an early start on a long day of eating.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Toby
